The Deception of the Black Rose by K.G. Ryder | Reviewed by Salem

Grab your pirate hat and hold on to the rigging, because you are in for a wild ride!

The Deception of the Black Rose follows British Royal Navy Lieutenant Ben Harrington, whose ship is captured by an infamous pirate queen known only as the Black Rose. What makes her so well-known on the high seas? She takes the highest-ranking survivor after a raid and brings them to her bed. If they perform well enough, she allows the remaining survivors to live. And you guessed it—Ben is her next target.

What I loved most about this book, besides the generous amount of spice, was the world building. You can tell how much research and love went into writing this historical romance, not only through the setting but with all the side characters. Each one is unique, with backstories that are provided through a wonderful blend of dialogue and Ben's own notetaking as he catalogues the history of the Black Rose. The representation of different cultures and identities was written beautifully, and I quickly fell in love with the entire crew along with our two main characters.

I also enjoyed the humor throughout the story. While there are heavy topics, it's balanced well with jokes and hijinks from the motley crew that had me laughing out loud. Watching Ben go from someone who thought he was the butt of every joke to cracking them along with the rest warmed my heart.

For a spicy pirate romance filled with adventure, found family, and engaging characters, look no further!
